Welcome to the Mathematics Department.

The Mathematics department at the College is thriving and exceptionally successful.  All students are fully engaged and stretched by high quality teaching and enrichment material which goes well beyond exam board specifications. The department is committed to challenging its students and providing a varied and engaging mathematical experience for them, irrespective of ability level. We believe all students can aspire to surpass their potential.

Mathematics, by virtue of its content, allows students to be creative and open minded in their approach to lessons, with an immediate feedback loop for success. Within the classroom we encourage a collaborative approach to problem solving; a key skill in the new GCSE.  Through the real life application of mathematics, students will develop the confidence to make mistakes and take risks, preparing them for how they will use these processes in the future. Our intention is that all students will be numerate, and equipped with the problem solving skills needed to succeed in life, by the time they leave ECC.

The programme of study for students consists of a two-year key stage three course, followed by our rigorous GCSE course running from Years 9 to 11. The success and enthusiasm of the students leads to a high number continuing to study Mathematics at A level including Further Maths.  We currently have over 50 students studying Mathematics in the sixth form.  In addition, a significant number of students, some of exceptional calibre, go on to study mathematics or a related subjects at university and we can offer a special programme of support including preparation for entrance exams (such as STEP) and interviews. Students are extremely successful and make good progress demonstrated by the examination results achieved recently.
