Welcome to the English Department

The English Department is made up of 22 highly qualified and talented specialists.  Together, we seek to build on the considerable skills students gain in Key Stage 2, in order to foster high standards of literacy in our young people, as well as a genuine love of reading.  We work closely with our wonderful librarians to ensure that English lessons are stimulating and that all students - regardless of their ability, have full access to a wide range of rewards through our successful 'Accelerated Reader' initiative (these prizes range from bookmarks to 'Skip the Lunch Queue', passes to Mufti days and a pizza/film in the summer).

We have recently re-vitalised our Key Stage 3 curriculum to incorporate texts from a wider range of cultures, traditions and time periods, which in turn will create opportunities for students to write for a wider range of purposes/audiences.  Furthermore, following a successful trial with Year 9, our homework schedule has been re-structured to increase the level of challenge and allow some freedom of choice over the tasks students undertake.  The SEND team work closely with us to support our learners with additional needs and to ensure that learning is personalised. We are also continuing to develop our provision for our most able students, the highly successful 'Read Around the World' initiative being the most recent example of this.

All of our Key Stage 4 students follow a double award GCSE course in Language and Literature and, in doing so, are exposed to a range of high quality poems, plays and novels. In delivering the GCSE, we aim to enhance the students' experiences through theatre visits and live streams by the National Theatre and the RSC .  The opportunities for students to excel in their examinations extend well beyond the classroom, with lunchtime 'Writing Clinics' for Year 10, twice-weekly 'Exam Masterclasses' for Yr 11 and the new introduction of 'Breakfast Club' for potential A Level students - coffee and bacon rolls included!

On the subject of the A Levels, we run these in both Language and Literature and students' attainment in these is consistently some of the best in the College; Ofsted recently noted the significantly positive outcomes for our A Level students and our uptake in Post 16 continues to grow - particularly for Literature.

We look forward to working in partnership with parents to secure the very best experiences and outcomes for all.
