Key Stage Three
Students follow a Careers programme of study as part of the ‘Lesson 42’ curriculum taught by their tutor. The objectives of these sessions can be found below and are taken from the PSHE association guidelines. Students from year 8 upwards are also able to book appointments with our independent careers advisor who is in college on a Wednesday. Please let your tutor know if you would like an appointment or pop into the careers office.
Key Stage Four
The programme of study at KS4 is aimed at equipping students for the next stage of their lives and choices they will need to make. The programme of study is taught as part of the ‘Lesson 42’ curriculum and is delivered by their tutor. The sessions are designed to signpost students towards useful resources, as well as developing the skills needed for these next stages (for the programme of study/ objectives (taken from the PSHE association) please see below). The programme is also supplemented by guest speakers, assemblies by other educational providers and opportunities such as the ‘Higher Education’ Double Decker bus provided by Next steps. We also encourage students to visit the careers department and introduce themselves to us so that we can then forward any opportunities directly to them that may be of interest, although these are always shared with the tutors.
The department also organises the very successful 'Community Cadets Scheme' for students in key stage three and four. There are weekly meetings/training which lead to a pass out parade with all the local services present. The cadets work closely with the Police Service and attend community events in a supportive role. If you are interested in becoming a community cadet- please pop into the careers department or let your tutor know.
The department support the work of the Post 16 team in providing guidance and support regarding UCAS applications, personal finance, pastoral care, apprenticeships and work experience. Students can also book an appointment to see our independent careers advisor.
Every two years, the College holds an impressive careers fair open to all our students, parents, carers and the community. The fair has over 60 stands and is an invaluable opportunity for students to explore opportunities available to them and to network with potential employers and training providers.
