Music
At Exmouth Community College, our Music curriculum is rooted in the belief that every student deserves the opportunity to discover, enjoy, and develop their musical potential. Led by a team of passionate, practicing musicians, our department offers a dynamic and inclusive environment where creativity, technical skill, and cultural awareness are nurtured through diverse experiences in performance, composition, and listening.
We aim for all students to:
-
Acquire performance techniques and develop core musicianship;
-
Enjoy and appreciate music as a lifelong source of inspiration and expression;
-
Build an understanding of musical contexts, genres, and global cultures.
Through an ambitious and carefully sequenced curriculum, we ensure students can connect prior learning with new experiences across the strands of Performing, Composing, Listening (Technical and Expressive), Singing, and Notation. Our broad and inclusive approach — from Bach to Beyoncé, Folk to Fusion, European to Caribbean — reflects the diversity of music in both historical and contemporary contexts.
We are proud of our purpose-built facilities, which include state-of-the-art recording studios, Mac Suites, and dedicated practice rooms. These enable students to work professionally and creatively from their very first lesson, supported by a skilled technician and a team of visiting instrumental specialists.
Our curriculum is enriched by our location in the vibrant coastal community of Exmouth, and we actively seek ways to build cultural capital, broaden horizons, and connect students with the wider world through music.
Students have the opportunity to continue their musical journey beyond Key Stage 3 by studying either GCSE Music or BTEC Tech Award in Music Practice at Key Stage 4, and can progress to A Level Music or Level 3 BTEC Music as part of a vibrant and well-established Post-16 curriculum. These pathways provide excellent preparation for further study and careers in the creative industries, performance, teaching, or sound production.
Beyond the classroom, our extensive extra-curricular programme — including ensembles, workshops, musical productions, and overseas performance tours — offers every student the chance to experience the joy of making music with and for their community. Throughout the week, at lunchtimes and after school, many different clubs are run by both staff and students. These include Band, House Band, Sing, Shout, Cantare, Chamber Ensemble, Music Technology club and GCSE revision clubs. Students are also encouraged to take up peripatetic music lessons with visiting instrumental teachers. Our current offer of peripatetic lessons includes piano, vocals, guitar, drums, violin and flute.
We are committed to helping students grow not just as musicians, but as confident, creative individuals ready to contribute to and engage with the world through the power of music.
