Dance

Dance at Exmouth Community College is a vibrant and inclusive subject that inspires and celebrates creativity, expression, and cultural diversity. Through a rich and sustained learning journey from Year 7 through to GCSE and A Level, students have the opportunity to explore performance, choreography and critical appreciation of a wide range of dance styles and global dance cultures. Benefitting from a fully equipped dance studio, study space and theatre, dance is taught by specialist teachers and has a long history of success.

Each lesson is designed to inspire and challenge students to develop their physical dance skills and techniques as well as express themselves by developing their own ideas, responding to a range of stimuli in choreographic tasks.

Our curriculum centres around a broad range of current dance styles and influential dance practitioners from the UK’s most successful contemporary dance company Rambert to Hip Hop company Boy Blue; all of which have had a huge impact on the dance world. Additionally, we explore world dance styles such as Samba, Kathak, Capoeira and African dance at Key Stage 3 ensuring students are informed about how dance has inspired culture and communities.

Critical appreciation of significant dance works is interleaved with practical lessons, enabling students to write critically about the meaning and making of these works to expand their vocabulary and literacy skills. Along the way, dance students gain valuable transferable skills such as communication, collaboration, and problem-solving – skills that support their wider learning and future aspirations.

The Dance Department is enriched by a range of extra-curricular opportunities, including Key Stage 3 Dance club, theatre trips, workshops with professional dance companies and our much-anticipated annual dance show The Blend. Each year dance students also have the opportunity to audition for our annual whole-college production, where the Expressive Arts Faculty work closely to create dynamic, interdisciplinary musical theatre performances.

Many of our students continue to study a broad range of subjects beyond school, while others pursue their passion for dance into professional training at leading universities and prestigious conservatoires. Whatever their path, Dance at Exmouth Community College equips students with confidence, creativity, and a lifelong appreciation of the arts.
