Core Mathematics 

What you will study? 

Core Mathematics is about students doing meaningful mathematical problems to increase their confidence in using mathematics to be better equipped for the mathematical demands of other courses, higher education and employment.

Why should you study core maths?

Mathematical skills are becoming increasingly important in the workplace and in higher education - studying Core Mathematics will help students to keep up these essential skills. Core Mathematics at Exmouth would support your learning in subjects such as Psychology, Business Studies, Geography and the Sciences. It is not a requirement to study Core maths alongside these subjects, but it may help. Feel free to discuss the mathematical content with the course leader of your desired subject. The qualification also carries UCAS points (20 points for an A grade).

Further Mathematics 

What you will study?

Further Mathematics is an additional A Level qualification taken in addition to the Mathematics A level. A level Mathematics is studied in Year 12 and Further Mathematics in Year 13. This is a highly challenging and highly regarded course. This qualification both broadens and deepens the mathematics covered in A level Mathematics and, for someone who enjoys mathematics, it provides a challenge and a chance to explore new and/or more sophisticated mathematical concepts. Students study Pure Mathematics as well as the applied units Statistics and Decision Mathematics. The topics covered build on each other lesson by lesson. Students must therefore show real commitment to the course with regard to attendance and completion of work.

Why should you study further maths?

Studying Further Mathematics is excellent preparation for university, especially if you wish to study Mathematics related subjects eg Engineering, Computing.

Additional entry requirements: Standard entry + a grade 7 in GCSE Mathematics, plus grade 7 in GCSE Physics/77in Double Science.

Mathematics

What you will study? 

Students study pure mathematics and applied units in statistics and mechanics over two years. It will encourage and develop your range of mathematical skills and techniques. Your increased understanding of mathematics and mathematical processes will promote confidence and provide a strong foundation to progress to further study.

Exam board – AQA Maths - 7357

Why should you study maths?

Mathematics is a highly respected qualification and is a requirement of all mathematically based degrees and of many scientific and engineering courses. A Level Mathematics is accepted (with other subjects) as an appropriate qualification for entry to almost any career or degree course.

Additional entry requirements: Standard entry + a grade 6 in GCSE Mathematics.
