English Literature
What you will study:
- Paper 1: Love Through the Ages – AQA poetry anthology, ‘The Great Gatsby’ by F.Scott Fitzgerald, ‘Othello’ by William Shakespeare and unseen poetry.
- Paper 2: Modern Times – ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’ by Margaret Atwood, ‘Feminine Gospels’ by Carol Ann Duffy, ‘A Streetcar Named Desire’ by Tennessee Williams and unseen prose.
- NEA (Coursework): Texts across Time - 2,500 word essay comparing ‘Far From the Madding Crowd’ by Thomas Hardy with a text studied independently.
How you will be assessed:
Exam board – AQA Two exams – all open book (clean copies) except for the Shakespeare essay question. One NEA - 20% of the course
Why you should study English literature:
English Literature A Level has long been regarded as a qualification that produces rounded, analytical thinkers, who can write with fluency and creativity. It is a subject which encourages you to think for yourself and expand your knowledge. You will study a variety of novels, plays and poetry from different time periods. The NEA (coursework) component will allow you to follow your interests in selecting your comparative text. Studying literature at A Level is about independent thinking, discussion, interpretation and creativity.
This A Level is highly regarded by universities and will open up many career pathways for you such as law, education and publishing. Every year, we offer students a range of opportunities to visit the theatre, attend study days or author visits.
Additional entry requirements: Standard entry + Grade 5 in GCSE English Literature.
