Key Stage 4

Core PE at Keystage 4

All pupils participate in 1 hour of practical PE per week at Key Stage 4 in groups that are single sex and set by ability. In Key Stage 4 we aim to build on the broad experiences provided in KS3 and also provide an experience of new activities and roles in sport.

Along with participation and performance, pupils gain experience as coaches, leaders and officials. Our overarching aim is to find activities which engage pupils enough for them to become lifelong participators in a variety of sporting roles.

Pupils follow a common programme of study. Units of work are based on the National Curriculum and are adapted to the individual needs of our pupils. Pupils also have an opportunity during student voice activities to put forward their suggestions for activities that they would enjoy doing in PE.

Their suggestions are then considered and reviewed by the PE department and used to design the programme, ensuring that it is pupil focussed and inclusive.

GCSE (AQA)

3 lessons a week – mainly theory based.

You must be performing in two sports in competitive situations.

The course builds on the knowledge, understanding and skills established in Key Stage 3 Physical Education (you may have worked on GCSE theory as part of your lessons). It will give you exciting opportunities to develop your knowledge in many theory based areas. You will be involved in a number of different physical activities (in core lessons), promoting an active and healthy lifestyle.

What does the course involve?

Students will study the theoretical and practical aspects of a number of areas.  Students must be aware that this is not solely a practical subject - there is a very large amount of theory in the new course.  Even the practical elements will require clarity of thought involving much of the theory content.  Students will be asked to work on practical performance in after school clubs and weekend sports.

The theory areas to be studied are:

Body Systems Movement Analysis Diet & Exercise Hygiene & Safety in Sport Socio-cultural Influences Physical Training Use of Sports Data Sports Injuries and Prevention Sports Psychology Health, Fitness & Well-being.
