Music AS-A2

If you are interested in musical performance, musical composition and learning about music in general then this is the course for you.

You will have opportunities to perform on your chosen instrument (30%), compose your own music (30%) and learn about specified pieces of music (40%).

You will need to have analytical skills, music notation knowledge, enthusiasm for participation and a willingness to learn. The course leads you on to further musical study and/or employment. You will also have practical and creative skills to impress potential employers.     

What qualifications do I need?
You need to be at a good standard (Grade 5+) on your chosen instrument.  It would be advisable to have a knowledge of music theory and notation.  GCSE Music is a great advantage as is an understanding of the theory of Music.

Expressive Arts
Music Technology AS-A2
If you are interested in sound recording, creating musical performances using computer technology and learning about the technological development of music then this is the course for you.

You will have opportunities to record performers (20%), create a computerised performance (20%), arrange music using a computer sequencing package (20%), write about how you completed your work (10%) and study popular music styles since 1910 (30%).

You will need an accurate musical ear, ICT skills, commitment to learning how to use new software and a willingness to learn. Independent learning and work is vital. This course can lead to sound engineering higher levels of study and/or employment in the music industry.        

What qualifications do I need?
It is useful to have studied music or information technology at GCSE or Intermediate GNVQ level, but this is not essential.  It would be advantageous to have a knowledge of music theory and notation.
